Usually, I’m left unimpressed because there is minimal (if any) clinical research available on their benefits for me to support them. However, this is not the case with the now-trending Niacinamide. This is one hot topic that I can’t get enough of! (scroll to picture evidence below)

Ok so Niacinamide is well researched for it’s versatility in skincare products. Scientific studies have shown that it can reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and acne, so scientists and dermatologists have no reservations standing behind this superstar ingredient. As soon as I started using it, I seen a huge improvement…like a distinct improvement! Infact, I loved it so much that I made sure it was the main ingredient in my clean beauty mask Firefly Beauty Rescue Mask

Here’s what you need to know about this skincare superstar!

What is Niacinimide?

This multifunctional ingredient is a water-soluble derivative of niacin or vitamin B3. “Vitamin B3 is one of eight vitamins in the vitamin B complex,” says Brendan Camp, M.D., double board-certified dermatologist Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in New York City. “They are essential vitamins, meaning the body does not make them or does not make enough to be sufficient and an outside source of vitamin B is needed.”

Cells in our body and skin need niacinamide to keep functioning properly and for carrying out various processes that occur in our body (like metabolism and damage repair). Although the exact mechanism by which niacinamide works in the skin is not fully understood, several studies have shown clinical benefits when applied topically.

What are the benefits of Niacinimide in Skincare?

Theres a whole host of benefits to this skincare superstar! It has the potential to boost your skin in more than one way, according to top NYC Dermatologist Josh Zeicherner from Mount Sinai Dermatology.

Brightening. “Niacinamide is typically used in patients who have sensitive skin and for those with aging skin and dark spots,” says Dr. Zeichner. (yours truly) Niacinamide is thought to block the enzyme responsible for melanin (or pigmentation) production and improve the appearance of skin tone: A clinical study published in the British Journal of Dermatology showed that a 5% niacinamide moisturizer applied twice daily for two weeks significantly improved hyperpigmentation. This shows that niacinamide has the potential of brightening skin better than the same moisturizer without it.

Anti-aging. As we age, the production of proteins like collagen (which is essential to keeping skin plump and smooth) decreases. This reduction can lead to visible wrinkles and loss of firmness. Niacinamide is thought to slow down the appearance of wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. A clinical study published in the Dermatologic Surgery Journal revealed that x2 daily use of 5% niacinamide moisturizer reduced the appearance of fine lines significantly at 8 weeks and improved skin elasticity significantly at 12 weeks. The stats don’t lie!

Improving acne. Dr. Camp says niacinamide “may help reduce oil production,” and a study in the International Journal of Dermatology indeed showed that a 4% niacinamide gel used twice daily significantly decreased acne in 8 weeks.

Lessening rosacea. Niacinimade “may help the barrier function of the skin, which is important in rosacea skin because it is easily susceptible to irritation,” says Dr. Camp. Skin lipids (such as ceramides) are responsible for maintaining the barrier function of the skin and keeping it hydrated. I suffer from redness myself, and really noticed a huge improvement in redness when I use this ingredient!

How to Use Niacinimide?

This vitamin B3 derivative is typically formulated into leave-on products like serums and cremes and is best used twice per day for these reported benefits. “It can also be combined with other products that soothe and brighten skin, and is commonly paired with ingredients like hyaluronic acid,” says Dr. Zeichner. Niacinimide can be a costly ingredient for companies to add, but I insisted we use this in my Mask line…The results are just astounding. So yes, it’s a group effort – however …The Firefly Rescue Mask is incredibly healing and gentle and the Niacinimide in the mask was the only thing I used at the time. I highly recommend you try products with this infusion – the results speak for themselves. I may be a little biased, but it took 2 years to formulate this very special product – and I’m SO glad I did. Cut the crap out of your products and your skin with thank you for it – it’s really that simple.

Buyer beware: Always remember that every product formulation is different, containing a cocktail of other ingredients, so be sure to read the packaging directions for best results! Avoid products with synthetic colors, parabens, mineral oil and other junk that will negate the benefits of the good ingredients.

Clean Beauty Products are non toxic and always the best bet.
